PAUL GREENE
Paul Greene’s three and a half octave voice, catchy melodies, witty lyrics and unique arrangements make him one of Australia’s most exciting musical prospects. His music is a magnificent concoction of soul, folk, pop, roots and rock which he delivers all by his lonesome, with only a battery of well worn guitars, a stomp-box and a belt full of harmonicas for company. One of those rare performers whose songs are infectious and easily accessible, yet full of depth and complexity he is equally as well versed as a songwriter and an interpreter of other people’s material.
Discovered by Midnight Oil's Rob Hirst, Greene has built a loyal and enthusiastic following via a never ending journey through Australia’s version of the old Southern American chitlin’ circuit: a variety of well-trodden bars, clubs, pubs, town halls and small theatres in small country towns and regional centres, as well as established music venues in capital cities.
The inspiration behind Ben Harper’s ‘Diamonds on The Inside’ Greene has sold nearly 50,000 albums independently in his native Australia (which, per capita, would be similar to selling 700,000 in the USA) however, until 2008, his name was familiar only to music industry insiders and a close knit community of admirers around the country. With the May 2008 release of ‘Distance over Time’ on his own Whirl Records label (distributed initially by Destra, now Shock Records) the staunchly independent performer’s music reached a whole new audience thanks to his phenomenal live performances and rave reviews.
In 2008 he scored the coveted national support for Patty Griffin's Australian tour and has become a regular on the festival circuit – in the past 12 months he has performed to hundreds of thousands of music fans at The East Coast Blues & Roots Festival, Queenscliff, Toyota Muster, Festival Of The Sun, Coastfest, Deni Ute Muster, Caloundra Music Festival, Woodford Folk Festival and Peat’s Ridge. He has been confirmed as a performer at Apollo Bay Music Festival and CMC Rocks the Snowys in March 2010.
‘Distance over Time’ was ABC National Album of The Week upon its release and is a wonderful showcase for Greene’s songwriting skills, justifying the many critics who regard him as one of Australian music’s best-kept secrets. Radio station 3PBS’s tipped it as one of the Best Roots albums on week of release while Rhythms proclaimed “Paul Greene is one gifted musician. He sings like a friggin’ angel.”
